Science Parks

A Science Park is a business support and technology transfer initiative that:

  • Supports the development of links to strengthen technology
  • Transfer to help the growth of business enterprise
  • Promotes initiatives of value to Science Park tenants
  • Facilitates the interchange of concepts, ideas and experiences
  • Provides a forum for developing collaborative initiatives.
  • Assists members to develop their Science Park

Every Science Park offer a different range of services to the companies they host. Some of these services can be as follow:

  • Flexible tenancy agreements designed to foster growth of new businesses (facilities of the size and for the period that suits their individual projects).
  • Opportunities for valuable interactions with freethinking specialists.
  • Access to advanced and state-of-the art technologies.
  • Business support services such as guidance on company formation, access to R&D funding, market assessment, protection of intellectual property, recruitment and training.


UK Science Parks Associations (UKSPA)

The mission of UKSPA is to be the authoritative body on the planning, development and the creation of Science Parks that are facilitating the development and management of innovative, high growth, knowledge-based organisations.

A Business Incubator is a facility designed to assist businesses to become established and sustainable during their start-up phase. Statistics show that business incubators increase the survival rate of start-ups from 35 to 87%.

Business incubators can be private or public. Private incubators are for-profit firms that take equity or receive a fee for the business services they provide to their clients. In essence, they are a consulting firm that is specialised in new firm creation. In many cases, public incubators are focused on high-tech industries. For science-based business incubators, an effective collaboration with universities and research institutes can motivate researchers into taking the risk of initiating a company.

Industry sectors supported through business incubation include: science, regeneration, manufacturing, and life sciences.

Incubators can have many partners in addition to universities. Since new firms require finance to grow, incubators have close relationships with many kinds of investors. Seed capital and venture capital funds, business angels, and banks generally provide most of the seed and start-up capital for incubated companies.

Since business incubators are powerful economic development tools, they collaborate actively with regional and national government agencies, from which they often receive financial grants.

Mentoring support – Growth Accelerator

A new service was launched in 2012 to support high growth potential businesses in the UK. This service, the growth accelerator has a series of support actions available to help mentor businesses in the best way to grow their businesses. There is an initial web-based tool to define a company’s ability and ambition for growth, followed by tailored services offered ideally to the Board of small businesses, which can include training and direct monitoring across a range of topics (IP, accessing finance, building management teams etc.)

The service is open to all industrial and service sectors, with an emphasis on coaching and support for business growth.

Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies - Semta

Semta operates in each of the English regions and in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, focusing on the science, engineering and manufacturing industry sectors.

A skill gap analysis for the UK in the Bioscience industry sector (including pharmaceutical and medical devices) was completed by Semta in May 2008 and can be found online[1].


Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS)

MAS is one of the Government's ‘Solutions for Business’ suite of offerings, jointly funded by BIS (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) and the nine English Regional Development Agencies.

MAS is designed to help manufacturers improve their processes (reducing waste, improving energy efficiency etc.).

Design Council

Design, including user-centred or user-inclusive design, is a major component of the work of The Design Council who works closely with the TSB in promoting good design as a part of any innovation process.


Design Council - Designing Demand Programme

Designing Demand boosts performance, speeds up growth and improves the bottom line by putting design at the centre of your business strategy. It was created by the Design Council and is part of the Government’s national package of publicly funded business support products, Solutions for Business. It helps businesses discover how to become more innovative, more competitive and more profitable. It does this by giving managers the skills to exploit design by spotting opportunities, briefing designers and running projects that deliver.


The British Design Innovation (BDI)

The British Design Innovation is a not-for-profit membership organisation whose services and professional membership reflect the increasing focus on open and collaborative innovation by designers, industry, universities and dealmakers. BDI is the trade organisation for leading industrial designers, service designers and innovation professionals in sectors such as aeronautics, biotechnology, consumer electronics, food and drink, medical, nanotechnology, telecommunications and transport.

Founded in 1993 as an independent not-for-profit organisation, BDI is financed by its members and managed by 30 regional board directors. BDI’s website is the Platform for:

  • A comprehensive directory of UK’s design capabilities.
  • BDI Newswire service, delivering design and innovation news.
  • BDI Innovation Filter, which comprises a secure portal for evaluating ideas, trading IP and identifying business partners online.

With the success rate of getting patented ideas to the market being only two per cent, inventors need all the assistance available.

UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO)

IPO are the official government body responsible for the role of Intellectual Property (IP) rights in supporting innovation and for granting IP rights in the United Kingdom (UK).

These IP rights include:

  • Patents – protect the technical and functional aspects of products and processes.
  • Designs – protect the visual appearance or eye appeal of products.
  • Trade marks – protect signs that can distinguish the goods and services of one trader from those of another.
  • Copyright – protects materials such as literature, art, music, sound recordings, films and broadcasts. IP also covers trade secrets, plant varieties, geographical indications, performers' rights – often more than one type of IP may apply to the same creation


Lambert Toolkit for collaboration agreement (guidance as provided by IPO)

The Lambert toolkit is for universities and companies that wish to undertake collaborative research projects with each other.

The toolkit consists of a set of five Model Research Collaboration (one to one) Agreements numbered 1-5 and four Consortium (multi-party) Agreements lettered A-D and documents that should help you to use and understand those agreements. The toolkit was prepared by the Lambert Working Group on Intellectual Property.

The Institute of Patentees and Inventors

The Institute has among its membership not only inventors but patent attorneys, marketers and others who can provide expert advice to its membership on the complex issues relating to invention and innovation. These issues cover not only intellectual property rights but also topics as diverse as originality searching, manufacturing practices, pricing practices, presentation techniques, funding and other subjects relating to the exploitation of an invention.



SETsquared is collaboration between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Surrey which partners in enterprise activities and collectively supports the growth and success of new business opportunities through spin-outs, licensing and incubation. The Partnership also works with industry through research collaboration and consultancy.

SETsquared is another organisation assisting inventors and entrepreneurs its key objective is to help technology-based ventures move from initial ideas into commercial viability. It brings together the research strengths of four leading universities with private sector commercial expertise and a network of experienced entrepreneurs, potential investors and business professionals across Southern England.


Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA)

The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) is the professional and examining body for patent attorneys (also known as patent agents) in the UK.

CIPA was founded in 1882 and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1891. It represents virtually all the 1,750 registered patent attorneys in the UK whether they practise in industry or in private practice. Total membership is over 3,000 and includes trainee patent attorneys and other professionals with an interest in intellectual property (patents, trade marks, designs and copyright).

European Patent Office (EPO)

The European Patent Office (EPO) provides a uniform application procedure for individual inventors and companies seeking patent protection in up to 40 European countries. It is the executive arm of the European Patent Organisation and is supervised by the Administrative Council.

The EPO recommends the use of patent databases as a source of ideas for innovators, scientists and engineers, and also a source of useful legal information such as whether a patent is in force or not, and where. The European Patent Office recommends the following free databases for patent research:


World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system, which rewards creativity, stimulates innovation and contributes to economic development while safeguarding the public interest.

The patent search facility allows you to search 1,749,622 international patent applications and to view the latest information and documents available to the International Bureau.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) - FCO Science and Innovation Network

The purpose of the FCO is to work for the UK’s interests in a safe, just and prosperous world. In meeting this, a major proportion of FCO resources are devoted to promoting international trade. The FCO’s Science and Innovation Network (SIN) has four objectives:

  • Scientific collaboration – facilitating scientific collaboration between UK universities and research laboratories and the world’s best public and private-sector counterparts abroad, and working to increase access to foreign funding for UK researchers.
  • Innovation – strengthening the UK’s innovation capacity by attracting R&D intensive international investment, helping UK companies to access and benchmark overseas technologies, and facilitating R&D partnerships and technology transfer.
  • Influence – using science and innovation to influence Governments and other overseas players across the range of the UK’s international strategic priorities (eg infectious diseases).
  • Policy-making – helping UK and overseas policy-makers develop best practice in science and innovation policy, and developing international frameworks in breakthrough technologies (eg stem cell research).

A public directory of Test Houses available in the UK is available online and published by the Society of Environmental Engineers. The directory classifies the test houses according to their technical capabilities, which make the tool user-friendly and easily searchable.

National Physical Laboratory (NPL)

NPL is the UK´s national standard laboratory. It develops, maintains and disseminates national measurement standards for physical quantities such as mass, length, time, temperature, voltage, force and pressure, and many others. It also undertakes underpinning research on engineering materials and information technology. The Laboratory explores and implements ways in which good measurement practice can contribute to UK competitiveness and compliance, and is being developed as an internationally respected measurement services provider.


Health Design and Technology institute (HDTI) - University of Coventry

HDTI offers the opportunity for products within the community and consumer healthcare market to be tested and evaluated within the Institute. This offering can be adapted to suit the needs of the customer and can involve a variety of different evaluation mechanisms. These include the use of a mock-up facility which allows users to view, test and evaluate a product or service in a developed reality setting. Also available is an observed usability laboratory to evaluate single and group interaction with products. By facilitating collaboration between users, companies, healthcare practitioners and designers, these facilities allow the feedback of valuable information to the design and development of the product.

These services draw on existing capabilities within the University of Coventry to manage targeted applied research activity and carry out usability studies.
