Other sources of clinical needs information

NHS Innovation Hubs (or NHS Innovation Centres)
England had eight regional NHS Innovation Centres (hubs), aligned to regional geographies and (in most cases) Strategic Health Authority boundaries. The Hubs were set up around 2004/2005 with a dual mission; to champion the cause of healthcare innovation and to identify, develop and commercialise innovations and Intellectual Property created by NHS staff.

Important notice: there are changes underway in the funding of Innovation Hubs in England, so new business models are currently being developed and changes are expected. No further information can be given due to the fluid nature of these Hubs at this time.

The NHS Innovation Hubs services have and continue to develop, with a number of Hubs offering support to local and other businesses in accessing regional clinical contacts and support on how to engage with the NHS. However, they do not currently highlight specific needs that businesses can respond to.

The single Portal (www.innovations.nhs.uk) provides access to the eight English Hubs but provides limited information itself. Better access is through the regions, and it is suggested that you approach your local Hub first:

In Scotland, the equivalent organisation is Scottish Health Innovations Ltd (SHIL): www.shil.co.uk

NHS supplier information database (NHS-sid)
sid4health is available from www.sid4health.nhs.uk and is the sole official NHS supplier information database holding supplier pre-qualification information (PQQ). The service is shared among all purchasing organisations in the NHS and is free of charge to all suppliers and NHS users.

Publication of a company profile on sid4health does NOT mean or imply that the supplier has in any way been vetted or approved by the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency and does NOT mean they are included on any of the Agency's framework contracts. Supplier information displayed in sid4health is provided and maintained by suppliers.

The database holds information that can be accessed and used for different purposes, such as searching for open business opportunities. Companies can potentially use this information to define the competition landscape: who are our main competitors, what are their products, how do their prices compare to ours?
