Introduction - Rationale for this Mapping

The medical technology market is an important sector for the UK, directly employing over 50,000 people and having an annual UK turnover of £13.1bn[1]. The current global market is estimated at £150-170bn with growth to £300bn forecast by 2015[2].

Within the UK, 98% of businesses are classified as SMEs with many of these expected to contribute to the innovation potential of the UK. Understanding how to innovate effectively in the UK and overseas markets will contribute to business success, UK economic impact and improved patient care.

Many organisations and infrastructures exist to provide support for innovation, but the complexity of the market (finance, regulations, and evidence of clinical utility) makes it difficult to navigate through the development pipeline. This innovation support report and the associated ‘map’ are intended to provide a single reference point for the range of services available (public and commercial). It is intended to support business innovation primarily for the Medtech/Healthtech industries (ie not pharmaceuticals), although it may also be of interest to academics and innovators on the clinical side who wish to understand more about commercialisation. As the map will be most familiar to those people who already operate in this space, you should refer to your local or national networks for further assistance:

The map describes the UK innovation support infrastructure as of 2012. Due to the dynamic nature of this infrastructure this map will be maintained as accurately as possible and is intended to guide you to authoritative websites for the most up-to-date information. It is also intended to be an interactive tool to the extent that we wish to hear from you if you see inaccuracies or you have new information to add - in this case please send your input to This email address is being protected from spambots.
